'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A Long-Term Option

Earlier this season Burton had to turn to Kevin Poole to solve a goalkeeping crisis. We had to do this again at the weekend when Jordan Pickford was recalled by Sunderland.

Poole had retired in 2012 but Gary Rowett had spoken with his goalkeeping coach in the summer to see if he would step in, at a push, to help out and he would so that saw him back on the bench in October.

When injuries struck earlier in the season Poole stepped in, but Pickford's loan arrival was meant to eliminate that but his subsequent recall to the Stadium of Light has left us short so at the age of 50 Poole will be back on the bench when we take on Mansfield tonight.

In the long term Rowett isn't keen on this but temporarily until we can bring someone in he's no qualms with sticking the half centurion on the bench, Rowett told BBC Radio Derby: 'Obviously that is not something we want to do long term.

'I said to Pooley at the start of the season that if we have to do it for one game, if it saves us wasting money on a loan keeper for a month, then it makes sense for me to do it.

'If we had brought someone in for a month before the game on Saturday we would have found mid-window, when we can't bring anyone in, that we would have lost someone to their parent club and we would have been left without a keeper again.'

Lyness is someone that Rowett has a lot of respect for, and thinks will be a very good goalkeeper but also feels that some aspects of his game need to be worked on.

Now, the decision is does he get a run of games or does the 'keeper that comes in come in as the first choice or back up for Lyness to get that run of games?

I'd like Dean to get his chance but I just feel that the boss is going to look to borrow someone that will come in as number one as few 'keepers would be willing to come in on loan just to sit on the bench would they....
