Rowett: Players Deserve A Shot At Wembley

Burton did it, a 2-2 draw at Southend United on Saturday afternoon was enough to take them into the league two play-off final.

Going into the second leg tie the Brewers had several injuries, and a suspension, to contend with and the team coach also broke down before they set off! Some might have viewed that as a sign it wasn't meant to be, on the other hand perhaps it was a sign it was and that is how Gary Rowett took it.

The boss was left exhausted after making it to Wembley, his players were full of life and he definitely thought that his side deserved this.

Speaking to the media after the game the boss said: 'We have lost five or six players to injury and suspension, and yesterday the team bus broke down before we set off.

'I couldn't tell you the things we have had to deal with over the last two weeks but sometimes out of adversity comes triumph and we have used that as much as we could.

'The players deserve a shot at Wembley and I'm really pleased for them. The lads are bouncing around drinking champagne but I'm exhausted!'

Marcus Holness had put Burton ahead on the day before Ryan Leonard and Anthony Straker turned the game around and put Southend ahead. Adam McGurk's 12th goal of the season, and the winner of the first leg, meant that the Brewers drew two-two on the day but won 3-2 overall.

Rowett believes that the 'character' shown sums up Burton's season with the 'heart' that his side have perhaps making up for some quality missing.

He added: 'It was an amazing game. We had a slender lead and to score early on was fantastic, but to then concede two goals, I had to remind the players at half-time to be a bit more ambitious.

'We steadied the ship and then the goal went in and we had a few scary moments at the end.

'To show the character we did sums up our season. We haven't got the quality of some teams in this division, but we have as much heart as any team.'

Burton are going to Wembley!
